Broken Narratives
Özlem Şimşek is a photography, video and performance artist who studies identity representations. She transforms herself using make-up, gestures and costumes into Ottoman - Turkish women, carrying out a performative research on the categorization of desires behind the historical as well as societal engineering of womanhood and femininity perceptions. In “Broken Narratives” project which includes her works from the collection “Contemporary Turkish Art as an Autoportrait”, Şimşek dresses up as the female figures depicted in the prominent, modern Turkish paintings.
